Plywood grades explained: MR, BWR and BWP
12 Oct 2026 · BuildX Team
Plywood grades describe how well the boards resist moisture. Matching the grade to the location is the single biggest factor in how long your furniture lasts.
The three common grades
- MR (moisture resistant) — for dry interiors such as wardrobes and bedroom furniture.
- BWR (boiling water resistant) — for kitchens and areas with occasional moisture.
- BWP / marine (boiling water proof) — for sink cabinets, bathrooms, exteriors and anywhere wet.
Plywood vs MDF vs HDHMR
| Board | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Plywood | Strong, holds screws well | Higher cost for premium grades |
| MDF | Smooth for painting and routing | Weak against moisture |
| HDHMR | Dense, moisture resistant, flat | Heavier; needs proper hardware |
Tips
- Check the brand's authenticity code or app where offered.
- Seal all exposed edges with edge banding or lipping.
