How many cement bags do you need for a house?

Cement is usually the first big purchase on any build, and running out mid-pour is costly. Here is a simple way to estimate how much you will need.
The rule of thumb
For a typical RCC-framed residential building, plan for roughly 0.4 bags (50 kg) of cement per square foot of built-up area. This covers foundations, columns, beams, slabs, brickwork mortar and plastering.
| Built-up area | Approx. cement |
|---|---|
| 1,000 sq ft | ~400 bags |
| 1,500 sq ft | ~600 bags |
| 2,000 sq ft | ~800 bags |
What changes the number
- Number of floors and soil type — deeper foundations need more concrete.
- Wall material — AAC blocks use less mortar than clay bricks.
- Finishes — gypsum plaster in place of cement plaster reduces cement use inside.
OPC or PPC?
OPC 53 grade gains strength quickly and is often used for structural concrete where early de-shuttering matters. PPC develops strength more slowly but offers better workability and durability, which makes it popular for plastering and masonry. Follow your structural engineer's specification.
Buying tips
- Order in phases so bags are used within about three months of manufacture.
- Store bags on a raised platform, away from walls and moisture, stacked no more than 10 high.
- Use bulk prices — larger orders bring the per-bag price down.
