Tile adhesive vs cement mortar: which should you use?
21 Oct 2026 · BuildX Team
Traditional sand-cement mortar has been used for decades, but ready-mix tile adhesives are now the default for most new work. Here is why, and how to choose.
Why adhesive wins
- Thinner bed: 3–6 mm instead of 20–25 mm, which saves height and weight.
- Stronger bond: polymers grip dense vitrified tiles that cement alone struggles with.
- Less hollowness: fewer drummy tiles and cracks.
- Faster: no site mixing of sand and cement, so less wastage and cleaner sites.
Picking the right type
| Use | Look for |
|---|---|
| Ceramic tiles on floors indoors | Standard (Type 1) adhesive |
| Vitrified and large-format tiles | Polymer-modified (Type 2/3), non-sag for walls |
| Stone, glass mosaic, light marble | White adhesive to avoid staining |
| Exterior, wet areas, tile-on-tile | High-flex, water-resistant grades |
Good practice
- Use a notched trowel and back-butter large tiles for full coverage.
- Respect the open time printed on the bag — do not spread more than you can tile.
- Finish joints with a matching grout; epoxy grout for kitchens and bathrooms resists stains.
